A Lagos Magistrates’ Court, Ejigbo has ordered the arrest of a 38-year-old hotelier Mrs. Mary Adiekwe, who allegedly bit off one of the ears of her employee.
Adiekwe was said to have assaulted the manager of her hotel, one Chinwendu Nkemakolam for demanding her salary after she was relieved of her employment.
The complainant, a Business Administration graduate from the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTHEC), was said to have been employed by the defendant as manager of the hotel located at 38 Olusesi Street, Ikotun on N25,000 monthly salary.
She was said to have been sacked few months after she resumed duty and given a date to come for her salary, which she obliged.
Unfortunately, the victim had gone for her money as promised by the defendant, only for an argument to ensue between them, leading to the hotelier biting off her ear.
Although she was rushed to Igando General Hospital for doctors to stich the fallen part of her ear, that was not to be as the cells died before their arrival at the hospital.
The doctors were said to have stopped her profuse bleeding, after which the matter was reported at the Ikotun police station.
Subsequently, the hotelier was charged before Magistrate M.B. Folami on three counts of assault occasioning harm.
She pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail in N50,000 with a surety in like sum.
But the defendant after securing bail, has refused to show up in court, prompting Mrs. Folami to issue a warrant for her arrest.
Her lawyer had tried to plead on her behalf that the parties have resolved for an out of court settlement and that she has agreed to pay the victim N25,000 as her salary and medical bill.
Angered by the defendant’s disregard for the court,  the Magistrate ordered that she must appear before her and show course why she should not be sent to prison for intentionally frustrating trial.
The matter has been adjourned to June 1.
