In what seemed a comic relief, rearrested freed inmate yesterday promised to transform the nation’s economy should he survive his predicament.
The suspect, Collins Ebong, was arrested barely 24 hours after he was released from Ikoyi Prison where he had awaited trial for 10 months.
He was nabbed by personnel of the Lagos State Police command in the Ajah area of the state for allegedly robbing Zenith Bank customers with a toy gun.
Ebong, 26, was said to have ambushed customers at Zenith Bank, Ajah, last week with his conspirator identified as Wale a.k.a. Walata currently at large.
While being paraded by the state Commissioner of Police ( CP ) Kayode Aderanti, the frightened Akwa Ibon state born suspect asked reporters if the police would kill him.
Hear him: “Will police kill me? See how CP is parading us. If I am released I will not rob again. If I survive I will transform Nigeria’s bad economy. I will tell youths to abhor crime because it does not pay,”
According to Ebong, he was remanded in Ikoyi Prison for 10 months after he was arrested during a police raid at a “weed joint’ in Ibafo.
He claimed that the raid was occasioned by a land dispute, which he had no business in.
On why he was rearrested after his release, the suspect claimed that it was Walata who urged him to escort him near Zenith Bank so that they can snatch people’s bags.
“We wanted to snatch a bag from one person not knowing that people were watching us when they came to arrest us my colleague ran away and abandoned me, that is why am the only one arrested.”
