Goldsmith bags 10 months for stealing N10million worth jewelery

A 42-year-old goldsmith, Sikiru Adeyemi, who stole two pieces of gold necklaces valued at N10 million has been sentenced to 10 months imprisonment by an Igbosere magistrate’s court.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. F.O. Aigbokhaevbo, ordered that the convict would serve his term in prison in addition to 30-day community service, without an option of fine.
The convict, who was first arraigned on May 23, 2012 on a two-count charge of malicious damage and stealing, had pleaded not guilty.
Aigbokhaevbo said that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt that Adeyemi stole the pieces of necklace.
She sentenced the goldsmith to four months imprisonment on the first count of malicious damage to property and three months for stealing which were to run concurrently.
During the proceeding, the prosecutor, Sergeant Babatope Julius, had told the court that the goldsmith committed the offences sometime in December 2011 at Kosoko Ereko Street, Lagos Island.
Julius said the complainant, Alhaja Falilat Masha, had taken the items to the goldsmith to wash, but when she collected them she discovered that parts of the necklaces were missing.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 285 and 337 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
