Family condemns attack on Lagos Commissioner at Gani Fawehinmi’s memorial

The family of late Chief Gani Fawehinmi has condemned the assault meted Lagos State Transport Commissioner, Kayode Opeifa during the late sage’s memorial.

Gani’s family described the September 5 incident as disgusting and appalling, just as it distanced itself from the “crude and uncouth action”.

Opeifa had gone to the Jabita Hotel, Ikeja venue of the event only to be attacked with sachets of ‘pure water’.

The perpetrators in a video of the attack posted to Youtube, had claimed the commissioner was not invited for the event.

However, Mohammed Fawehinmi who said the letter for the family, tendered an unreserved apology to Opeifa.

He said: “I was reliably informed of the violent attack meted out to Comrade Opeifa who was a close associate of late Chief Fawehinmi, late Dr. Beko Ransome Kuti and late Chima Ubani.

“It is disgusting and appalling to know that the incident was recorded and posted on Youtube.

“On behalf of the Gani Fawehinmi family, I tender an unreserved apology to Mr. Opeifa who was violently attacked with sachets of pure water. This act was crude and uncouth, and the perpetrators acted on their own volition without the knowledge of the Gani Fawehinmi family.

“September 5 will always serve as a memorable day in remembrance of late Fawehinmi and in as much as we strive to correct the mistakes of government whether at state or federal level, violence will not serve as one of the options that would be adopted.

“I commend Opeifa’s sense of maturity and discipline for leaving the premises of Jabita Hotel in order not to escalate the mishap that occurred.

“We condemn this act in the strictest terms and would ensure in future that such a disgraceful incident never occurs.”
