For allegedly attempting to steal petroleum product from an arrested vessel, six suspects were yesterday arrested by the Nigerian Navy, NN.
Operatives of the NNS Beecroft, Apapa, Lagos, nabbed Hassan Eletu; Charles Enyenbo; Aabayomi Owolabi; Ogunsanya Adekanmi; Chukwuka Emenike and Steven Okafor at the Elegbeta Channel area of Apapa.
All six were handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Commander, NNS Beecroft, Commodore Chris Ezekobe, while parading the suspect said the two ships involved in the crime will remain in the custody of the navy until investigations are concluded by the police.
Represented by Abubakar Mohammed, Ezekobe said one of the vessels used by the suspects was MV ARTI, which was arrested by NNS Andoni on July 15 with about nine crew members.
“She was arrested close to one of the ships in naval custody which was also arrested by NNS Andoni. At the time of the arrest, the vessel was suspected to have attempted some illegal business with the ship that was ealier arrested.
“Further investigations revealed that certain document and IMO compliances were not met by the vessel,” he said.
Although he said the vessels were being kept because the police does not have facility to maintain vessels, Ezekobe said the base will handover the ships if instructed by the naval headquarters to do so.
But the police team in charge of investigation will be allowed assess to the ships anytime they want to, said Ezekobe.
